Title: Overview: Renewing your Love of Medicine

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to:
• Describe the physiologic mechanisms underlying chronic illness: free radical damage, uncontrolled inflammation, nutrient excess, nutrient deficiency, toxic exposure and hormone imbalance.
• Appreciate how the above processes impact health.

Session 2 9:00-10:30am
Title: Cardiovascular Illness: Understanding and Addressing Endothelial Dysfunction.
Speaker: Cathryn Harbor, MD

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to:
• Describe the central role of endothelial in cardiovascular disease.
• Describe the role of elevated cholesterol, oxidized LDL and inflammation in creating endothelial dysfunction.
• Be familiar with literature supporting specific dietary and lifestyle interventions in reversing heart disease.

Title: Cholesterol and Beyond: A fuller comprehension of a patient’s cardiovascular risk

Objectives: At the conclusion of this session the participant will be able to:
• Discuss NCEP goals for LDL and controversies around them
• Know how to avoid nutrient deficiencies induced by cholesterol lowering medications and how to avoid them
• Describe and feel comfortable using newer lab assessments for heart disease risk: Lp(a) waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, VAP testing, fasting insulin, Reynold’s number, ADMA, fibrinogen and lipid peroxidases.

• Describe a 4 step approach to help patients overcome digestive problems: Removing pathogens, replacing deficient digestive enzymes, repairing the lining of the diseased gut, use of probiotics.

• Discuss approaches to assess and lower inflammation in patients with MS.

• Understand the importance of Vitamin D and controversies involving sun exposure
• Outline a dietary plan that will help patients identify causes of skin problems

Title: Dealing with Discomfort: Headaches, Restless Legs, and Arthritis.

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to:
• Describe the physiology underlying arthritis and restless leg syndrome.
• Describe non pharmaceutical approaches for these conditions

Session 10: 10:15-11:15am
Title: It is NOT all in their heads! Fibromyalgia, Hot Flashes, and PMS.

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to:
• Describe treatments for these issues related to women.
• Understand how inflammation and hormones interplay in chronic pain syndromes in women.

• Describe how elevated insulin creates a vicious health cycle culminating in obesity, heart disease, and premature aging.
• Describe interventions that can reverse this process.

• Describe the mechanisms and drawbacks of drugs to lower blood sugar
• Compare the various nutritional and dietary modifications used to address insulin resistance.

Title: Thyroid issues

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to:
• Understand the limitations of standard thyroid testing in diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disease
• Appreciate the importance of iodine, T4 to T3 conversion and antithyroid antibodies in thyroid disorders
• Explain approaches for patients who have normal TSH and symptoms of hypothyroidism

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to:
• Describe how stress modifies the HPA axis and affects overall health
• Describe interventions to lower stress toxicity.

Title: Sad and Sleepy, worried and weepy: Addressing depression anxiety and fatigue and insomnia.

• Describe medications commonly used for depression, insomnia and anxiety, and the side effects of each.
• Describe non pharmaceutical approaches that rebalance neurotransmitters through proper nutrients, specific stress reduction techniques and prescribed exercise.
